Which deity is associated with Aquarius?
Prometheus, the god of forethought and mankind
The myth of Prometheus is one of the most important of Greek culture, which marks the relationship between us – men – and the Gods of Olympus.
Prometheus was a Titan, that is one of the most ancient gods, who controlled the universe even before the Olympian gods headed by Zeus (Jupiter, for the Romans).
The giant was a cousin of Zeus and a great friend of mankind. Prometheus had 5 pairs of twin brothers, the Titans. One day they rebelled against Zeus and Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus sided with Zeus rather than the Titans.
This allowed Prometheus to befriend the other Olympians. One of these was Athena, daughter of Zeus, who taught him the arts of architecture, astronomy, mathematics, medicine, metallurgy, and even navigation: Prometheus transmitted them to humans.
Prometheus and his brother also received a number of good qualities from the gods, to be widely distributed among all living beings. Epimetheus began to distribute these good qualities to animals, at random and forgetting about men.
So, to remedy it, Prometheus decided to steal from Athena’s house a casket in which intelligence and memory were stored. He gave them to men. As soon as he discovered the theft, Zeus decided to get rid of the humans. You must know that classical mythology tells us that there was a very ancient period in which men and gods lived together happily. To worsen relations between Zeus and men was an event that occurred during a banquet. Humans had decided to share an ox and Prometheus was assigned to play the parts.
Since the titan wanted to favor humans again, he came up with a trick: he hid the best pieces of meat under a disgusting pile of ox skin. The rest, namely the bones and a few offal, he hid under an inviting layer of fat. Then he invited Zeus to be the first to choose his side. The other would have fallen to men.
The father of the gods, of course, chose the part that looked the most succulent. But when he realized the deception he went into a rage and launched a curse: from that day on men would have sacrificed only the waste parts of animals to the gods but, from that same moment, human beings would have become mortal.
In addition, as further punishment, the vengeful Zeus took away the fire from men, and from that moment they were forced to live in the darkness of the night. Prometheus then went to his friend, the goddess Athena, goddess of wisdom and crafts, to let him enter Olympus at night.
Arrived there he lit a torch with the fire of the chariot of Elio (the god of the Sun) and fled. When Zeus learned that Prometheus had brought fire back to men he went into a rage and ordered Hephaestus, god of sculpture, metallurgy, engineering, and fire (Vulcan, for the Romans), to create a beautiful woman who was given the name Pandora: she was the first woman of the human race, rich in the wonderful gifts that the other goddesses of Olympus gave her.
Zeus sent Pandora as a gift to Epimetheus (Prometheus’s foolish brother) so that he could marry her, and she could then punish the human race. Epimetheus, however, warned by her brother, refused her.
Then Zeus, furious, decided to make the titan and the men he defended pay once and for all. He had Prometheus chained to a rock on the top of a mountain. There, every day, an eagle would tear his belly and tear his liver apart for eternity. However, being a titan, he was immortal and his wounds healed during the night.
Meanwhile, Epimetheus, who hoped to change Zeus’s mind about the fate of his brother Prometheus, decided to marry Pandora. Shortly after, however, as the young woman was curious, she opened a vase that Epimetheus kept hidden.
Inside were all the evils that could affect a man and that had been closed thereby Prometheus himself: diseases, madness, fatigue, passion, old age, and death. As soon as the vase was opened, these evils immediately spread among men, and only hope, also in the vase, from that day, could give comfort to human beings in the worst moments.
