A list of trees that symbolize love

Cherry tree

cherry blossom tree

Giving a branch of flowering cherry indicated admirable polite behavior, according to nineteenth-century Anglo-Saxons. Meanwhile, in China, this tree still refers to beauty and female sexuality.

In Japanese symbolism, it embodies a message of good luck, happiness, affection, and love, but also of transience due to the shortness of the life cycle of these delicate and fragile flowers with a radiant beauty destined to fade just two weeks after they blossom.

The multitude of meanings of the Japanese cherry blossom is linked to the precariousness of cherry blossoms as a metaphor for the ephemeral duration by nature and human mortality. Precisely in this meaning the existence of samurai in classical iconography is reflected: represented in the grandeur of his figure wearing the armor – of extreme beauty like a cherry blossom – suddenly he can however be crushed by the enemy with a single swing of a sword.

The warrior’s life ended so prematurely, but with honor, refers to the petals that fall to the ground during a sudden storm like drops of blood which, according to a Japanese legend, would have been absorbed by the cherry blossom’s roots, resulting in the petals being colored a pale pink. The cherry blossom tattoo was reserved exclusively for these imperial guards, which later remained a symbol of all martial arts.

Jasmine tree

Throughout history, people have attached special meaning to the symbolism of flowers. The practice came into full bloom during the Victorian era when the language of flowers was more popular. Speaking through flower symbolism was especially popular among romantic couples because public expression of such affection was frowned upon.

Today, many flowers still carry those meanings with them: among them is the jasmine flower. For thousands of years, the jasmine plant has been cultivated not only for the beauty of its small white flowers but for its intoxicating scent.

Native to the foothills of the Himalayan and Ganges plains, the plant has been cultivated and brought to India, China, the Middle East, and other regions. From there it spread to France, Italy, and the Mediterranean and was eventually introduced to the rest of Western Europe and Britain.

Today, jasmine is grown and cultivated around the world in its many varieties. Due to its sweet, sensual scent, white jasmine symbolizes loving, attachment, and sensuality.

Wisteria

Originally from China and Mongolia, wisteria is a very common flower in the Far East, known and appreciated since ancient times and above all, a flower to which numerous symbols and meanings have been attributed.

Its flowers gather in tight clusters that vary in shade from soft purple to violet. This brings this plant closer to the figure of the goddess of beauty Venus, who is a well-known symbol of sensuality and femininity. Due to the particular shape of its floral clusters, wisteria is also a symbol of friendship and gratitude.

It happens that the ancient Japanese emperors brought wisteria bonsai with them when they were on a representative trip to reach foreign lands: the wisteria was meant to be a sign of peace and a wish for serenity between the kingdoms. The floral clusters of this climbing plant, in fact, seem to manifest a sort of bow aimed at paying homage and showing respect.

In China and Japan, Wisteria symbolizes friendship and availability, an interpretation also adopted in Western countries.

Wisteria is also considered a talisman against adversity, to be given to those closest to our hearts.
