Which deity is associated with Virgo?

Demeter, a goddess of fertility

Demeter, as the goddess of harvest, fertility, and motherhood, represents the female archetype strictly connected to pregnancy and the care and nourishment of children. In a broad sense, this archetype refers to that energy of the woman’s psyche that comes into play in every area in which she expresses her personal fulfillment by caring for others by bringing them nourishment, be it physical, emotional, or spiritual.

Some women can be guided by this archetype in what turns out to be their main life occupation (whether they are mothers of many children, prodigal cooks, schoolteachers, or social workers or in the helping professions). Others may ignore the energy of Demeter until they meet her only at a certain point in their life.

Demeter refers, more strongly than other goddesses, to the archetype of the Great Mother, the prime symbol of the feminine.

In order for it to be beneficial and useful for the realization of a woman, she must realize in her psyche a “fruitful” encounter between this and other archetypes of personality: a good mother—of herself and of others—cannot be such if just a mother. In Greek mythology, we trace the three lines of Demeter’s motherhood as a biological mother (of her daughter Persephone), giver of food (goddess of crops, that is, she who made the crops necessary for the sustenance of human growth), and spiritual support (she was dedicated to the Eleusinian Mysteries).

We trace these three characteristics in the myth of the rape of Persephone, the young daughter of Demeter who was kidnapped by the god Hades, brother of Demeter, under the approval of Zeus, father of Persephone herself (Dementra had been her consort before Hera).

Demeter, not knowing how to resign herself to the kidnapping of her daughter, after having wandered in vain in search of her, retired to a temple and stopped providing for the growth of the crops. The terrible famine that followed led Zeus to intercede for her: it was thus that Persephone was partially returned to her mother (remaining only a third of the year married to Hades in the underworld).

Demeter then returned the crops to the earth and established the very important Eleusinian Mysteries throughout Greece. Generosity and perseverance are among the main characteristics of Demeter, the woman strongly in contact with this archetype will instinctively know how to put herself aside and put the needs of her children before her own since it is in doing this that she draws her own joy and personal fulfillment: to be realized and deeply satisfied in the moment in which one ensures the well-being of the life of others.

It is in this sense of self-efficacy that a woman draws nourishment for herself and self-esteem. These are precious aspects that every woman can discover in herself when she enters motherhood, especially in the early stages of a child’s life when she is in symbiosis with it.

In the very first months, she literally “cancels” herself for her baby, she continues with them a sort of “physiological” symbiosis in these early stages of the baby’s life. Only gradually will a sense of separateness be restored and, subsequently over the years, a sense of existence will be built up in the child autonomously and separate from her body.

Main qualities Demeter has in common with the sign of Virgo

No matter how challenging life may be, you are the kind of person who always has the wind in their sails, while retaining great modesty. Intelligent, rational, meticulous, you put care and dedication in everything you do.

Virgo, the Virgin, detail from the Horoscope from ‘The book of birth of Iskandar”

You are very responsible and never leave anything to chance; this is the only way for you to obtain satisfactory results. And you have a great need to get these results, because your habit of constantly putting yourself in is always for a good reason, though it sometimes leads you to lose faith in yourself.

In friendship, in love, at home, or at work, it is very rare for you to give up, but when that happens, you are soon forgiven, you are so loving and devoted.

You’re always discreet and give confidence only to those who show real interest and you always have an eye out for everyone. Extremely patient and disciplined, at work as well as at home, you need to feel efficient and indeed you are, if everything is well organized. You feel comfortable with people who are like you, meticulous and conscientious.

If not, you need some time to be able to adapt. Your life is an example of stability. It takes a while to find the ideal partner, but once you have found them, it is difficult for you to let them go. As a Virgo, you love to create and cultivate both material and spiritual things.

If there is something that is preventing you from getting what you want, you can definitely work to make it happen, becoming aware of who you are at a deeper level.
