This is one of the reasons I’ve used a smudge stick myself. When the energy felt heavy and negative, I wanted to acknowledge that feeling and give my space some attention.
You could do the same after a stressful week or while settling into a new home. Start with one room if that feels enough. You don’t need to cleanse the entire house!

Sage and palo santo are common choices in modern witchcraft for protection and cleansing. Then we have lavender for peace and rosemary for cleansing and clarity. These are spiritual correspondences rather than promises about what the smoke will do.
Choose a suitable herb you connect with and remember that white sage isn’t a requirement. You can pick what you consider the best choice for the goal and the intention you have in mind.
Making your own herb bundle (the safe way!)
If you want to make your own, use herbs suitable for burning and don’t forget to keep things safe. Keep the bundle small and let it dry completely before burning it then.
Check the center as well as the outer leaves: everything should feel dry.
Never burn unknown plants, treated greenery or herbs that smell musty or show mold.
Setting an intention and choosing your words
Take a quiet moment before lighting the bundle. What would you like this ritual to represent? You could say, “I release what feels heavy and welcome peace into my home”.
Change those words until they feel like yours. I wouldn’t worry about finding a special prayer. A simple sentence you connect with is enough to begin.

Lighting and using it safely
Follow the bundle’s instructions. Light the tip over a heatproof container and extinguish the flame so only a small ember remains. Keep a heatproof tray underneath to catch falling embers and stay away from curtains, paper and dried flowers.
Use very little smoke and never leave it unattended. You can remain in one place rather than carrying it around every corner.
Opening windows and considering others
Open a window when outdoor air conditions allow. Ventilation helps reduce smoke buildup, though it doesn’t make smoke harmless. I would choose a smoke-free ritual when children or pets are around, or when someone is sensitive to smoke. A bell, spoken intention or visualization can make the moment just as personal.
Cleansing your altar and magickal tools
Tidy your altar first, then include it in your cleansing intention. You can do the same with crystals or other tools without holding them directly over the ember. Keep delicate materials away from heat, soot and ash.
There is no need to cover everything in smoke. Focus on what you want the space and tools to represent in your practice.
How to store a smudge stick
Press the burning tip into sand in a heatproof container. If it keeps smoldering, use water. Check that it is completely extinguished and cold before putting it away.
You can reuse a bundle that is dry and in good condition, so don’t feel you have to burn it all. Store it away from heat, children and pets.

Let the room air out, then take a moment to enjoy the space. You might journal, begin your spell or simply rest. Don’t worry if you haven’t felt a dramatic change!
