What is a prayer for the departed?
It is a special prayer you dedicate to those who passed away to honor them, celebrate them, and let them know you are still thinking about them.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
A prayer for the departed is a potent spiritual practice that can provide comfort and support in the grieving process.
It does not require you to be a religious person, as it is a flexible and personal ritual that can be adapted to your beliefs.
The optimal time to perform this prayer is during a quiet moment when you can focus your energy and intention.
Preparing for the prayer involves creating a sacred space, using items like white candles, pictures of the departed, essential oils, and amulets.
What can a prayer for the departed do?
It can work as an easy but powerful way to create a deep connection with the departed so they can show you the way when you’re in need by giving you guidance, support, and comfort when you feel low, sad, and alone.
Do I need to be a religious person to say a prayer?
Absolutely not! This is something that goes way beyond religious beliefs. If you feel you need to honor someone who passed away, simply go for it. It means your mind and your soul need this.
What is the best time to do it?
The best time to do it is at night. The night is when we can relax even more and we are ready to open ourselves to be more receptive and sensitive as we leave the day far behind.

How to prepare for prayer?
If you want to say a prayer, there are a few things you can do to make it effective and powerful. It’s nothing too fancy, don’t worry! I am going to share with you some tips and tricks to truly create a soothing, relaxing, and open-hearted atmosphere to deepen the connection and the practice even more.
Light up a white candle
Lighting up a white candle is a great way to let the departed see a light in the dark and find you quicker. Plus, in many traditions, a lit candle is a sign you are thinking of someone, a sign of awareness and presence.
Use a picture of the departed
If the person you lost is someone dear to you, like a close friend or a family member, you can use a picture to honor them. You can choose a picture showing this person only or you can choose a picture showing you and this person having the best time together.
Do what feels best for you as long as you choose a picture that truly speaks to your heart, making you feel it is a picture that treasures the best of that person.
For example, if the departed you would like to honor loved to go hiking and that activity sparked joy for them, a picture of them hiking and having the best time doing it is definitely a great picture to use during prayer.
Essential oils
If essential oils are your thing, you can choose a cypress essential oil as it’s the best oil to honor the departed while relaxing you and opening your mind and your soul to this connection. Just three drops can be enough. If essential oils are not your favorite resource, you can use incense; frankincense is another wonderful way to pray and relax.
Cleansing
If you want to reconcile yourself with the departed, for example, if you and the person who died were having some issues or were in a fight right before they passed away, I think that a cleansing ritual can be great to let the negativity disappear and truly open yourself to forgive and forget the past and honor this person with positivity, love, and kindness.
You can go for a cleansing bath or for a smudging session. It is your call. Do what you prefer.
Use an amulet
If you have an amulet or the person who died had an item they considered to be precious, bring it to this prayer session and use it as a talisman. It can be basically anything: an item or a piece of clothing.
If you don’t know if this person had one or if you cannot find it, simply bring something that reminds you about the connection you had with this person and your time together.
For example, if you and this person used to go drinking wine together, a glass of wine can be a great way to let them know that you cherish this memory and you will do things in their memory even when they’re gone.
Prayer for the departed
“My beloved (…..) I hope you are doing fine
Might the light show you the way for a serene eternal life of peace and rest
You had a great life and, even when struggling, you brought light into others’ lives…
My thought is for you… my heart is with you…
May your soul find the final eternal peace you deserve…
I am going to cherish every moment, every smile, every tear we shared…
You won’t be forgotten.”
Prayer for dead mother
“Dear Mother, I miss you
You are in my prayers, in my mind, in my heart, in my soul
I cherish every moment we spent together…
The highs and lows… the darkness and the light…
The bad parts and the good ones…
I am going to live my life honoring you…
Honoring the chance you gave me to be in this world… to be part of the universe
I am going to live each day in your memory…
Making you proud… smiling for you… living for you
May we be connected in the afterlife…
I love you… I always will.”
What to do after the prayer?
You can leave the candle and item there as a set altar, letting the candle burn out completely. You can keep that item or you can even not let the candle be consumed entirely this first time and keep chanting the prayer for more days if you feel the need to.
It’s your call! Store the item linked to that person in a place that makes you feel safe. This can be a one-time thing or you can chant this prayer over and over again. It’s your call!
