The first time I came across the word syzygy, I remember thinking it sounded like something from a fantasy novel!! It turns out the idea is much simpler and actually quite beautiful.
In astronomy, syzygy describes a roughly straight-line alignment of three celestial bodies. When we’re talking about the Sun, Earth, and Moon, this happens at every new moon and full moon. Eclipses are also special examples of syzygy.
For those of us who work with the Moon in magick, that makes syzygy an especially interesting concept.

In astronomy, it describes celestial bodies positioned in a nearly straight line.
With the Sun, Earth, and Moon, there are two familiar examples:

When Does Syzygy Happen?
For the Moon, syzygy happens at every new moon and full moon.
But there’s an important distinction here: not every new or full moon produces an eclipse.
For an eclipse to occur, the Moon also needs to be close enough to the points where its orbit crosses the ecliptic. That’s why eclipses happen only during certain new and full moons.
I actually love this distinction because it reminds us that a full moon doesn’t have to be an eclipse to be astronomically interesting.
Sometimes the ordinary lunar cycle is magical enough.
Syzygy and Eclipses
A solar eclipse happens around a new moon syzygy, when the Moon comes between Earth and the Sun.
A lunar eclipse happens around a full moon syzygy, when Earth comes between the Sun and Moon.
In other words, an eclipse is a particularly precise and dramatic example of celestial alignment.
But syzygy itself is not another name for an eclipse. The alignment happens much more often than eclipses do.
Why Is Syzygy Interesting in Astrology?
You’ll sometimes see the word syzygy used in astrology to describe the relationship between the Sun and Moon at a new or full moon.
Astrologically, these two lunar phases already carry very different symbolism.
The new moon is traditionally associated with beginnings, intention-setting, planting seeds, and turning inward.
The full moon is associated with illumination, culmination, release, and bringing things into awareness.
So when I think about syzygy from a magickal perspective, I don’t see it as something that gives a spell automatic power. I see it as a beautiful reminder of relationship, alignment, and timing.
The Sun and Moon aren’t working in isolation. They’re part of a larger celestial dance.
Working With Syzygy in Magick
You don’t need a special “syzygy spell” to work with this idea.
In fact, I prefer keeping it simple!
You might use the symbolism of alignment when:
- setting intentions at the new moon
- releasing something at the full moon
- meditating on balance
- working with solar and lunar energy together
- journaling about opposing parts of yourself
- creating a ritual around transition or change
For me, the word itself is almost a reminder:
What in my life needs to come back into alignment?
Sometimes that’s a much more useful question than looking for another complicated ritual.
