You may be familiar with a spread called the “Two Fold Path” spread, which considers two major life decisions.  The Three-Fold spread is a variation on this, drawing additional cards for a third option—The Path Unconsidered.

This is where the Tarot can be especially helpful in decision making.  Sometimes, when we are faced with two options, it can be easy to forget that life gives us infinite options, and while it is impossible to consider or even think of them all, taking the time to look at least one that fits outside the box can be helpful.

Position 1:  Where you stand now.

Position 2:  The next step forward on your current path.

Position 3:  The primary obstacle that stands in your way on this path.

Position 4:  The general direction you’re headed if you stay with it.

Position 5:  The first step on a new path.

Position 6:  The primary obstacle that stands in your way.

Position 7:  The general direction this path is headed if you chose to go this way.

Position 8:  The first step on a path you’ve not yet considered.

Position 9:  What stands in your way.

Position 10:  Where this path is headed.

The ten card spread above can help when you feel stuck between two choices. I especially like the third path because it asks a question we often forget: what else might be possible? You do not have to know what that option is before you begin. The cards give you space to look for it.

When Should You Do This Spread?

Use it when you are weighing two paths, such as staying in a job or leaving, continuing a relationship or stepping away, saying yes or saying no.

You can also use it when neither choice feels quite right. That feeling might be a reason to look more closely at the path you have not considered yet.

I would give this spread a little more time than a quick daily reading. Ten cards can tell a detailed story and you deserve a quiet moment to take it in.

How to Get Ready

Before you shuffle, name the decision as clearly as you can. Decide what you mean by your current path and your new path.

For example, your current path might be staying in your job while the new path is applying elsewhere.

You do not need to invent a third option. Leave that part open. If it helps, write your two known choices on paper so you remember which cards belong to which path.

Do You Need an Altar?

No. A table and enough room to lay out ten cards are all you need. I would keep a notebook nearby because it is easy to forget an interesting connection once all the cards are on the table.

You can light a candle if that helps you settle in, but the focus here is the decision you are exploring.

How I Would Do It

Well, I do this in 3 steps!

  • I would take a few breaths, think about the decision and shuffle while asking: “What do I need to understand about the paths in front of me?”
  • I would lay out the cards in order and read the current path first, then the new path. Before looking at the final three cards, I would pause and ask myself: “Am I treating these as my only choices?” Then I would turn to the path unconsidered.
  • That pause matters to me. Otherwise, I might try to make the third path fit an idea I already had instead of letting it surprise me.

How Do You Read the Three Paths?

Start with card one. It shows where you stand now and gives the rest of the reading its context.

Then look at each path as a whole: its first step, its obstacle and its general direction. I would pay close attention to the first step cards. A path can sound wonderful in theory, but what would you actually have to do to begin?

The obstacle cards can help you ask what might be difficult or what support you would need. The direction cards are something to reflect on, not a promise of exactly what will happen.

Your choices and circumstances can still change!! You are in charge of your path. Don’t forget it!

What If You Cannot Recognize the Third Path?

That is okay! Look at its three cards together and ask what they have in common. Could they suggest waiting, asking for help, changing the timing or combining parts of your two original choices?

Perhaps they point to something you have dismissed too quickly. You do not have to solve it during the reading. Write down what you notice and come back to it later. Sometimes an option becomes clearer once you stop trying to name it immediately.

Can You Journal About It?

Yes! I personally do it and I would recommend it for this spread! Give each path a little space in your journal.

Write what appeals to you, what worries you and what the first step would look like in real life.

Then ask yourself: “Which path am I drawn to, even if its obstacle scares me?” Your answer may tell you as much as the cards do.

Which Deck Should You Use?

Use a deck you know well and that you are comfortable with! If you are a beginner, a Rider–Waite deck and its guidebook can help you notice the symbols and build a story for each path.

You don’t have to read every card perfectly to get something useful from the spread.

Can I use this spread for a relationship or career decision?

Yes. Be clear about what each known path means before you shuffle so you can read the cards in context.

What if all three paths show obstacles?

That does not mean you have no good choice. Most decisions involve something difficult. Look at the kind of obstacle each path brings and ask which one you are willing and able to work through.

As it’s not something written in the stars, something you need to accept blindly. It’s a projection on how this could go but you are in charge to change it!

How often should I repeat the spread?

I would wait until something has changed: you have new information, a new option or a different question. Reading the same decision again immediately can make it harder to hear your own thoughts.

Conclusion

What I love about the Three-Fold Path Spread is the reminder that a difficult decision may have more room in it than you first thought. Read each path with curiosity, then bring what you learned back to your real life. You can take one small step without having every part of the future figured out.
