Make your Winter Solstice brighter with this Yule ritual for solitaries.

Celebrate the return of the light by blessing your home with the warmth of your highest vibrations.

Simple, natural, and beautiful ritual components bring the magic of the outdoors inside to chase away the cold and welcome the sparkling beauty of winter.

What is the Winter Solstice?

Yule, or the Winter Solstice, is the longest night of the year.

For many, it also represents the return of the light.  From this date forward, the days grow longer instead of shorter all the way until the Summer Solstice.

Magically, Yule offers us a time to reflect, to turn inward, and to focus our energy on the hearth & home.

Fire and ice are sacred to this season.  In particular, the hearth fire becomes the focus of the home.

(If you don’t have a fireplace, a home altar stands in as an excellent substitute!)

This Yule solitary ritual emphasizes the theme of hearth and home with a sacred winter blessing for your abode.

Things You Will Need

-evergreens (forage them from outside, or clip some from your Yule tree)

a wreath base

cinnamon essential oil

-1 white pillar candle

-coarse rock salt

Step 1

Attach your evergreens to the wreath base.  It does not need to be a large wreath, but it’s going on your front door, so you probably want the size to feel proportional.

Evergreens symbolize eternal hope and life during the longest and coldest months of the year.

We use them in this ritual to honor the light that cuts through the deepest darkness.

Step 2

On the night of the Winter Solstice, take your wreath outside along with something to use for an altar surface.  A stool, tree stump, or flat rock works fine.

Place the wreath flat on your altar surface.

Anoint it with a few drops of cinnamon essential oil.

Cinnamon is a classic ingredient in fall and winter rituals.  Here, it symbolizes winter fires.

Step 3

Place the white candle in the center of the wreath and light it.

Take some time to quietly reflect on the meaning of winter.  Think of your fondest winter memories, or silently play word association with the word “winter” and think of the words or phrases that most connote the season for you.  (Snow, ice, ginger cookies, etc).

Extinguish the candle and watch the smoke rise from the wick, imagining that it carries your thoughts and hopes skyward.

Step 4

Sprinkle the rock salt on your wreath, imagining it represents snowfall.

Mindfully listen to the sound of it hitting your wreath and stay focused on the moment.

Do this quietly and with reverence for the season.

Step 5

Finally, shake out the wreath.  Take it home with you and hang it on your door to bless all that pass through your threshold and offer protection and blessings to those who dwell inside.

Happy Winter Solstice!
