In English, a taglock is a matted bunch of wool or hair. Metaphysically speaking, a taglock is a personal item that creates a link to the target.

Taglock and Magickal Sybolism

Hair has always been more than just a physical feature: it contains energy, identity, and power. In witchcraft, it is a subtle and powerful tool. It is used for spells of beauty, protection, love, and abundance. But also for closures, evocations, and curses. Hair connects to the divine, to the ancestors, and to the inner spirit.

I remember sitting with my grandmother as she braided my hair. She whispered prayers with every twist. At the time, I didn’t understand. I thought it was just an affectionate gesture, a way to hold me still. Years later, I recognized that gesture for what it was: a form of magic, instilling protection and strength. A declaration of love, care, and presence.

Hair is ancestral memory; it holds vibrations, emotions, and memories. In many traditions, braiding or cutting it is a rite of passage: closure, rebirth, and protection. Taglock in Magick

If the taglock is from a person or animal, you might use hair, bodily fluids, a photograph, personal clothing, something bearing their signature, or fingerprints (or a paw print); any other item that can create a sympathetic link with the target of a spell.

If your target is a location rather than an individual, a suitable taglock might be a key to the building, some dust from a shelf inside the building, stone from a pathway, a bit of chipped paint, etc. Or, of course, a photograph. For a business, you might use a business card or some of their stationery with their letterhead on it.

The use of the taglock in the spell can vary. It can be used alone, placed inside a witches bottle or added to a poppet or other representational item.

Braiding as a Magical Act

Braiding hair is a daily gesture that can become enchantment. A small braid, hidden or visible, holds intentions, seals desires, and protects. The protective braid, passed down through generations, is one of the oldest and most powerful forms of this silent magic.

When I feel the need to impress an intention, I braid a small braid at the nape of my neck. I decorate it with colored threads in line with the intent I want to evoke. And it stays there until the intention is fulfilled.

Here are gestures that transform a simple braid into a spell:

Clear Intention: Before you begin, take a moment to listen to what you want to manifest. Formulate your intention in the present, as if it were already in place. Not “I would like more calm,” but “I walk in calm.” Not “I hope to protect myself,” but “I am protected.”

Oil on the braiding hand: Choose an essential oil that resonates with your intention. Lavender for tranquility, cedar for purification, mint for clarity. Pour a few drops on the hand that will guide the braiding, perhaps tracing a small symbol: a rune, an eye, a spiral.

Braid a strand: Take a small strand near the nape of your neck or face. Divide it into three sections and braid slowly.

Declare your intention as you braid. Each step of the braiding can be accompanied by words, whispered or thought. Repeat your intention with each gesture, like a mantra knotted in your hair.

Seal with a knot: Secure the braid with a carefully chosen elastic band: each color has a vibration. Red for courage, white for openness, orange for wisdom. If you’re unsure which one to choose, use a clear one.

Crystal in hand (optional) If you want to amplify the gesture, hold a crystal while braiding. Citrine for abundance, amethyst for clarity, smoky quartz for concreteness.

Hair and Curses

Anciently, and still today, it’s believed that hair, as an extension of an individual’s life force and personality, is one of the most powerful tools for sympathetic magic. This is why witches are careful not to leave it lying around: they know that whoever possesses it could command them, bind them, make them ill, or extinguish their fire.

For this reason, even today, many practitioners carefully preserve it, burn it in closing rites, or braid it into protective talismans. A forgotten lock can become a gateway.
