What are ritual salts?
The use of salt in ritual dates back thousands of years.
Essential to life, it is both ubiquitous on earth and yet a valuable commodity throughout history.
Most commonly in modern folk magic, salt is used to ritually cleanse, purify and preserve.
Less commonly, as in this recipe, the energy of salt is modified by other ingredients for a specific purpose. In this case, we add ingredients to impart the energy of spring, renewal and inner light.
Metaphysical Properties
All the ingredients in this recipe symbolize the clean, pure, joyful energy of Ostara and the spring season.
Green Tea
You probably know green tea as a refreshing tonic packed with antioxidants.
But it also makes a revitalizing addition to potions, spells and rituals.
In spring magic, it symbolizes new beginnings, rebirth and longevity.
Roses
If you still have your roses from Valentine’s day hanging upside down somewhere in your house, make good use of them!
There are many lovely, evocative ways to use roses in witchcraft.
In this recipe, I selected pastel pink roses, which evoke the softness of Ostara and the Spring Equinox.
Sea Salt
Sea salt is so foundational to my practice, my cupboards feel naked without it.
This ingredient represents the eternal, ubiquitous life force that reemerges with renewed vigor every spring.
It also attracts way fewer ants than sugar. You can sub sugar for salt in this recipe, but if you live anywhere south of New York, you’ll end up with an ant party around Ostara (and certainly by Beltane).
Coconut Oil (Optional)
Open a jar of coconut oil. Inhale.
Instantly, it calls to mind the balmy breezes of a beachy destination in the Caribbean.
Add coconut oil to turn these salts into a scrub only if you plan to use them in ritual baths.
I usually reserve coconut for summer love spells and kitchen witch recipes, but we include it here as a prelude to the coming warmth of spring season.
It symbolizes hope, hidden potential, and the nourishment of the soul.
How to use green tea & rose ritual salts.
Use these beautiful ritual salts to brighten any spring ritual, event or festivity. Here are some quick ideas to get you thinking.
-Add it to your ritual baths, especially for spring rituals like Ostara, Beltane and spring moon baths.
-Include these salts in beauty rituals or to evoke the goddess, Aphrodite. Aphrodite adores roses, and salt symbolizes the sea from which she emerged.
-Give it away as a gift. You can make these in large batches as an elegant but cost-effective party favor for handfastings, spring baby blessings, bridal showers or as coven swag.
-Mark your sacred circle with green tea & rose salts during rituals for new beginnings, spring rites or to awaken your inner goddess.
-Scatter salts in the woodlands as an offering to the fae or woodland spirits.

*clean glass jar
*sea salt (coarse or fine)
*coconut oil (optional, if you plan to use this as a salt scrub in ritual baths)
Step 1
Crush dried roses with your fingers or a mortar/pestle.
Blend together salt and crushed roses. Remove green tea from green tea bags. Add and blend.
If you don’t plan to add coconut oil, add rose oil now and you’re done.
But if you want to turn this into a salt scrub, wait to add the rose oil and proceed to Step 2.
Step 2
If you plan to use coconut oil, melt it now, gently warming it in small saucepan.
Pour warmed coconut oil into the salt/green tea/rose petal mixture.
Finish with a few drops of rose essential oil.
That’s it!
Blessed be.
