If you’ve been around spirituality, you’ve probably heard the word attunement. I remember the first time I came across it too. It sounded much more complicated than it actually is.
Over the years, I’ve come to think of attunement as a way of creating a deeper connection with a particular energy, practice or spiritual tradition.
It’s not a magic switch that suddenly makes you more powerful. In my experience, it’s much more personal than that!!
What Does Attunement Mean in Magick?
In simple terms, an attunement is a process of energetic alignment or connection.
I often compare it to tuning an instrument. The instrument is already there, but you are adjusting it so it can resonate more clearly.
Depending on the tradition, an attunement might involve meditation, visualization, ritual, symbols, intention or energy work.
And this is worth remembering: there isn’t one universal attunement ceremony.
Different traditions and teachers have their own approaches.
Attunement vs. Initiation
These words can sometimes get mixed up, but they aren’t necessarily the same thing.
An initiation usually marks entry into a particular tradition, group, lineage, or level of practice.
An attunement is more often about energetic connection or alignment.
Sometimes the two are part of the same process. Sometimes they aren’t.
If you’re learning from a teacher, I always recommend asking what they mean by “attunement” rather than assuming everyone uses the word in the same way.
What Happens During an Attunement?
This is probably the question people ask me most often.
The honest answer is: it depends.
Some attunements involve meditation, visualization, symbols, ritual or energy work. Others are much quieter and more soft.
I’ve experienced energy work where I noticed very physical sensations and I’ve also had experiences that felt incredibly quiet. I’ve learned not to judge one experience against another.
Some people feel warmth or tingling. Others feel emotional, peaceful, sleepy, energized or simply… normal.
There is no performance to pass!
You don’t have to have a huge spiritual revelation for an attunement to be meaningful.
Why Do People Receive Attunements?
The reason depends on the practice.
Someone might receive an attunement because they want to:
- deepen their energy-work practice
- connect with a particular spiritual tradition
- begin training with a teacher
- mark an important stage in their practice
- work within a specific lineage
For me, the most valuable part has never been the idea of becoming “more powerful.” It’s the opportunity to become more intentional and more aware of my own practice.
The real work happens afterward.
Reiki Attunements and Reiju
If you’ve researched attunements, you’ve probably encountered Reiki.
In many Western Reiki schools, students receive an attunement as part of their training. You may also hear the Japanese term reiju, which is associated with Reiki and is often described as a blessing, empowerment, or spiritual transmission.
The terminology and practices can vary between Reiki lineages, so don’t be surprised if two teachers explain attunement differently.
If you’re studying Reiki, ask about your teacher’s lineage and how they understand attunement and reiju. I think knowing where a practice comes from is always more useful than simply accepting a label.
Do You Need an Attunement to Practice Magick?
No.
This is something I’d really like beginners to hear.
You don’t need an attunement to start exploring witchcraft. You can meditate, work with herbs and crystals, practice divination, journal, create rituals or develop your own relationship with magick without receiving one.
Some traditions do have formal initiations or energetic transmissions and those are important within those specific systems.
But there is no universal spiritual rule saying that you aren’t a “real” witch without an attunement.
Please don’t let anyone convince you otherwise!! You choose how to live your spirituality!
Choosing an Attunement or Teacher
If you’re thinking about receiving an attunement, take your time.
Before committing, I’d ask:
- What tradition or system does the teacher follow?
- What actually happens during the attunement?
- Is training included?
- What is the attunement supposed to represent?
- What lineage does the practice come from?
And trust your instincts.
I’ve always felt that a good spiritual teacher should make you feel more capable of developing your own practice not more dependent on them.
Be particularly careful with anyone promising extraordinary powers or telling you that you need to keep paying for increasingly expensive levels to become spiritually “complete.”

Don’r wait for instant elightment but focus on each step of the way! As when it comes to spirituality and spiritual journey the journey is more important than the final results!
