Asperging is a form of ritual purification involving the sprinkling of liquid on the item, person or area to be purified.
Asperging in Practice
Asperging is generally done with water that has been sanctified in some way.
In Hellenic tradition, it is sanctified by dropping or dipping a burning bay laurel leaf into the water to extinguish the flame.
Some traditions bless the water by sprinkling salt into it and declaring it like the sea, the “womb of the Earth”. Herbs or oils may be added or moon water may be used.
The water may be poured, sprinkled using the hands, or sprinkled using an herb that has been dipped into the water for that purpose.
