Witchcraft & Divination in New Hampshire: Legality & Laws

/

Written by: Tina Caro

Nestled amidst the northeastern United States, New Hampshire, with its picturesque landscapes and rich history, offers a haven for various cultures, beliefs, and practices.

Among them, witchcraft and divination have been subjects of curiosity, acceptance, and at times, misconception.

But how does the “Live Free or Die” state perceive these ancient traditions from a legal standpoint?

Reviewed by a lawyer, Juliana Sirotsky Soria

Juliana Sirotsky Soria, an esteemed lawyer with a master’s degree passed with distinction in General Theory of Jurisdiction and Process from PUC/RS and a law graduate from PUCRS, meticulously reviewed the article.

Drawing upon her vast academic and professional experience, she confirmed the accuracy of the legal concepts presented and commended the comprehensive nature of the overview.

However, Ms. Soria emphasized the importance of always consulting state-specific legal codes and guidelines for precise details.

Has there been any significant media coverage or public discourse in New Hampshire surrounding witchcraft or related practices in recent years?

Books on the occult, bearing titles like ”Buckland’s Complete Book of Witchcraft” and ”To Ride a Silver Broomstick,” began showing up in the mail by the dozens last summer at the Seabrook Public Library.

The donated books started arriving after the library’s trustees, under pressure from religious leaders in town, postponed two proposed lectures last August on tarot reading, numerology and dream analysis. A group of about 300 local churchgoers objected to their tax dollars financing lectures that they said would promote the occult, comparing the lectures to the teachings of Satan. Some also called for the town selectman to withhold money from the library and shut it down, should the lectures be held as scheduled. The library has received close to 500 books related to the occult.

The Board simply believe that the public library is an ”inappropriate” forum for lectures on the occult.

While no statewide programs exist, local community centers, spiritual shops, or pagan communities may offer workshops or classes to educate and inform the public.

Conclusion

New Hampshire, a state renowned for its strong emphasis on individual liberties, reflects this in its approach to spiritual beliefs and practices like witchcraft and divination.

The Granite State serves as a reminder that understanding, acceptance, and legal protections can coexist, providing a nurturing environment where diverse beliefs can thrive in harmony.
