Inspiration for Triple Moon Pillows

So, true confession:  my biggest pet peeve about so-called “witchy” decor in the home is that it so often looks like a Halloween shop.

You know what I mean:  Dracula-like candelabras, and dark, heavy drapes.  Maybe a coffin-shaped box or two to store the incense.

Nope, nope, nope.

First of all, I have friends.  You know, friends who don’t practice witchcraft.

I also have neighbors, family, the UPS guy, all knocking on my door a couple of times a week.

And I’m not trying to scare off the little kids and give the chatty old ladies something to talk about on the front porch with a tomb-like chamber dripping with goth.

Personally, I go for magic-inspired interior decor that fits in with my comfortable, bright and (hopefully) stylish home.

So when I designed this set of pillows, I wanted to create something for you that doesn’t make you cringe when your sister’s book club borrows the living room for their monthly meeting, you dig?

I like these because they kind of wink at your witchy friends.

It’s not a gianormous pentacle knocking your on the forehead.

It’s just, you know . . . cute little moons.

Things You Will Need

-3/4 yard fabric on a solid color

-3/4 yard fabric in a contrasting pattern

-large piece of poster board

-scissors

-thread in complimenting colors

-a circular object (I used a large frying pan)

-pillow stuffing

Step 1

Make your pattern.

Start by laying your poster board on the floor or a flat surface.

Use your circular object to trace a large circle.  Mine was about 14″ in diameter.

Cut out the circle.

Step 2

Trace a second circle.  Then, off-set your trace object (in my case, the frying pan) to create a moon shape like so:

Cut out the moon shape.

Step 3

Fold both pieces of fabric in half.  Trace the circle shape on the solid fabric once, and the crescent moon shape on the patterned fabric twice.

You should end up with 2 pieces of circle-shaped fabric, and 4 pieces of crescent-moon-shaped fabric.

Step 4

Face the “right” sides of the circle fabric together, so that the wrong sides are facing out.  Sew around the circumference of the circle, and leave a 2-3 inch opening.

Turn the circle out so that the stitching is on the inside.

Take two pieces of crescent-moon-shaped fabric and face the “right” sides of the fabric together.  Sew around the edges, leaving a 2-3 inch opening.

Repeat with the remaining two pieces of crescent moon shaped fabric.

Step 5

Stuff your pillows.  Be careful not to stuff them too tightly, or they will be lumpy.

Close the open seams with a basic whip stitch.

It will look like this:

And there you have it!  Toss these on your bed, decorate a bench or liven up your living room couch.

  1. I love these! I also cringe a bit at some of the Hallowe’en type decor (unless it’s Hallowe’en) but really want to show my witchy side off in a subtle way.
