If you frequent food blogs on Instagram, you likely tripped across the recent culinary trend, curiously called moon milk.

Dreamy, creamy and full of natural, nourishing ingredients, moon milk recipes promote relaxation before bedtime.

Herbs?  The moon?  This recipe practically screams for a witch’s magic touch.  So I concocted my own version with you, dear reader, in mind.

Blended with from-the-Earth ingredients to induce insightful dreams, try this moon milk recipe during the next full moon or Esbat.

The beautiful, soothing, robin’s-egg-blue color comes from the natural dye of butterfly pea flowers.

Add to this the buttery sweetness of coconut sugar and the warm, aromatic richness of vanilla and you’ve got the perfect white witch’s brew to settle in under the full moon with.

Moon Milk:  The Meaning of Key Ingredients

Butterfly pea flowers:  The metaphysical properties of this ingredient include soothing frayed nerves, lifting the mood, and transformation.  That last one, transformation, is especially relevant to the moon cycles, which symbolize the changing tides of our daily lives.

Almond Milk:  In witchcraft, almonds and almond milk serve to promote fertile ground for change and new goals.  Added to moon milk, almond milk as a base lays the ground work for positive change.

Coconut Sugar:  The coconut in this potion represents hidden gifts not yet revealed.  You must break through its hard shell to get to the “goodies.”  We include it in full moon milk to remind us that as the coming month unfolds, so too will new revelations about our lives and the people and circumstances in them—-if we’re willing to break through the tough exterior.

Dried tea roses:  This ingredient is listed as optional in the recipe.  Include dried tea roses if you need a little boost in self-love.  The full moon is a great time to remind yourself that you are not defined by your past.  Love the lessons you grew from in the last moon cycle, then let go of the mistakes you made to learn them.

Nutmeg:  When brewed into a tea, nutmeg opens the Third Eye and encourages clear sight in the sense of clairvoyance.  Use it in this brew to aid your mental clarity as you contemplate the coming moon cycle and your goals.  Nutmeg both reduces unnecessarily negative thinking, but also prevents delusional optimism.  Balance in the mind equals balance in the body.

Drinking Moon Milk Ritually

Here are some ideas to take your tea into your sacred life:

Drink it before divination.  If you pull tarot cards, work with runes, or use a scrying mirror during the full moon, try drinking moon milk to promote more clarity in divination.

Serve it as part of Cakes and Ale.  Whether you work with a coven or as a solitary, consider serving it as a alternative during a Cakes & Ale ceremony.

Take it during a ritual bath.  If you love to take your ritual bath to the next level, brew some moon milk for your bath altar or tray and enjoy it during a long, hot ritual bath to help “sweat out” any lingering negative energy from your last moon cycle.

Try tea scrying.  Garnish your tea with whole flowers as instructed below.  Drink the full cup and allow the remaining flowers to settle at the bottom.  Relax, take a few deep breaths and look the flowers.  What do you see?  This method of scrying is not unlike looking at clouds to see what shapes are there.

-Use it as an infusion.  Have extra tea?  Allow waterproof crystals and gemstones to soak in moon milk for a few minutes to cleanse and charge them.  Be sure to rinse them afterwards with spring water or moon water to avoid residual stickiness.  Then leave them in the moonlight overnight.

Ingredients:

-2 cups unsweetened almond milk

-2 teaspoons ground butterfly pea flowers

-1 tablespoon coconut sugar (sub maple syrup, honey or your preferred sweetener)

-1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

-pinch nutmeg

-1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional:

dried tea roses

Step 1

Remove green stems from pea flowers and grind to a powder.  You may use a mortar and pestle, but dried pea flowers are usually brittle enough to simple crush with clean fingers.

If you opt to include roses, grind those, too.

Step 2

Bring almond milk to a low simmer on the stove.  Add vanilla extract and coconut sugar (or other sweetener), whisking constantly for 1-2 minutes.

Step 3

Add butterfly pea flowers, ground cinnamon and nutmeg.  Allow to simmer on low for 5-10 minutes.  The longer the brew simmers, the deeper the blue color from the pea flowers gets.

Step 4

Remove from heat and garnish with whole roses and pea flowers (if desired).  Serve immediately.

    • It’s definitely a sweet drink, but really nice before bedtime or late night. You can adjust the sugar to your preference.
