Which deity is associated with Aries?
Ares: A God of War
Ares was one of the main characters of Greek religion and mythology. He was the son of Zeus and Hera. He was a god of war, or more precisely of blood and struggle. He was the half-brother of the goddess Athena, both gods of war, but there is a distinction: Ares prefers the most bloodthirsty and violent aspects of war, while Athena is the goddess of war strategy and cunning (not surprisingly Athena is the protector of Odysseus).
Ares’ sister is Eris, goddess of discord. Occasionally Eris and Ares are also lovers, in some texts. Ares was born in Thrace to Zeus and Hera. In Thrace, Ares flees once he is discovered by Hephaestus together with the latter’s wife, Aphrodite.
According to some mythographers, Ares lived in a temple protected by the Amazons and went into battle wearing bronze armor and holding a spear. Often, in battle, he was accompanied by fearsome presences, the demon of the din, and the spirit of battle and murder.
His other fighting companions were Terror (Deimos), Fear (Phobos), and Discordia (Eris or Epis); sometimes there were also Polemos (in Greek, this means war) and his daughter Alalà, the personification of the battle cry.
Despite being a god of war, Ares often withdrew from battles, as in the episode of Diomedes (Iliad): on this occasion, Hera urged Diomedes to hit Ares, so the Achaean hero launched a terrible war cry and threw a spear at the god, who, screaming in pain, withdrew to Olympus
The very name of Ares can be traced back to adjectives that meant “infuriated” and “warlike”. The more peaceful Mars of the Romans was seen with a more favorable eye by devotees; the Greeks, on the other hand, always distrusted Ares.
Animals sacred to Ares were the vulture, the wild boar, the dog, the owl, and the woodpecker. Symbols of the god of war, on the other hand, were the bronze armor and the chariot drawn by immortal horses with golden harnesses. The cult of Ares was mainly celebrated in Sparta, a city particularly devoted to the art of war and struggle. In Sparta, there was a mighty statue of the god. In Athens, however, there was a temple dedicated to the god, in the agora.
Ares, being not only very strong but also very beautiful, had many lovers and several children. But Ares in classical Greek mythology is not only the lover of the goddess of beauty. He is considered under a more human aspect, as a generous and protective father.
Especially towards Enomao and Cicno, worthy heirs of his violent and inhuman temperament in using death as a punishment, he showed benevolent attention and gave important gifts; to Enomao he had given the wildest and most indomitable mares of ancient Greece, to Diomedes, born of Cyrene, he had donated special animals that ate human flesh.
A preponderant characteristic of violent characters is the tendency to do justice to oneself; Ares, a fiery and jealous lover, gave proof of his more than violent temperament when he killed Alirrozio, son of the god of the sea, without hesitation to save his daughter Alcippe, born of Aglauro.
Main qualities Ares has in common with the sign of Aries
An Aries, just like Ares, can be selfish and brave, and he learns quickly. He loves to manage a difficult situation and has good initiative even if he prefers not to carry out his projects. He has a constant need for new goals and new ideas. He is also a happy combination; he may be tactless even if he does not realize it.
While he puts on a brave face, this can be a cover as he can easily falter. Aries is generally in good health, but even if he has great energy, he is prone to suffer from their own enthusiasms and excesses. The classic Aries will always be in motion, courageous, impulsive to the point of recklessness.
He is convinced of his own reasons, scarcely diplomatic but certainly spontaneous to the point of ending his relationships even at a loss, often without considering the consequences of his actions and words.
He’s just as often able to fall back into the same mistakes already made, but always ready to recover and get up again. He has an enormous creative capacity, often accompanied by a need to excel.
Although not reflexive, nor constant, he tends to act continuously, almost to the point of wearing himself out from too much work, too many projects, perhaps even from the frustrations that the impossibility of being realized implies. Aries, however, has a force that we can define as mysterious: he falls and falls but always gets up, returns to his feet, and resumes his almost breathless motion.
Aries’ temperament can also be violent and punctuated with surges, but he is generally loyal and incapable of prolonged grudges.
However, as already mentioned, Aries is a bad diplomat; from the animal that characterizes his symbol, he has got into the habit of attacking the obstacle from the front without being able or willing to go around it (perhaps to not waste time). This is the kind of energy similar to Ares! Impetuous, strong, and not too keen on diplomacy but absolutely determined to get what he wants and to make his own opinion be heard!
